Holiday contest begins!

Since it's December 1st, I thought I'd get the festivities started. I'm giving away my two Hanukkah-themed books: Eight Nights and Daybreak. To win, all you have to do is comment on this post and tell me about one of your favourite holiday traditions. Doesn't matter if it's Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or whatever you might celebrate at this time of year, and you can go into as little or much detail as you'd like.

I'll leave the contest open for two days and then draw a name out of a hat on Thursday evening. Happy holidays!

p.s. Forgot to say that I'll put the name of the winner in this post and in the comments. I'm sure you all figured that out, though.

ETA: dizzyduo is the winner. Congratulations!

Well, I'm a contest whore. :-) I mean that in a flattering way of course.

On Christmas Eve my ex comes over (that's not the good part, that's the part I live with) and we order pizza and have chocolate fondue with lots of fruits and other dipable goodies. I figure I cook on Christmas day, I will order in on Christmas eve but this year my daughter is older and claims she's making a bunch of appetizers for dinner instead. We'll see what happens.

Every Christmas Eve my parents and I used to stay up really late and open one present at midnight, go to bed, then get up early to open the rest of the presents. We still do this when I go home for winter break. We don't get a lot of sleep but it's so much fun and it means a lot to me that me and parents are still able to get together and open presents and celebrate Christmas.

Hmm. How about what used to be a favorite holiday tradition, but which hasn't been replaced yet?!

My family used to always do our present thing on Christmas Eve. Then on Christmas Day, my best friend and I would go to a movie and out for Thai or Chinese, depending on what was open. Alas, he got married two years ago and now has other obligations on Christmas Day.

Fave holiday tradition is wandering around my neighbourhood with my Mum and looking at all the Christmas decorations that the neighbours put up.

Happy Reading

My father was a shift-worker when I was growing up. As a result, we didn't have a specific time to open presents, but arranged our Christmas around his work schedule. This has actually turned into a tradition now that my brother and I are adults. We choose what day will be Christmas every year instead of being tied to a specific date. It keeps our spouses and in-laws happy and we remember some of the crazy times we opened presents as children.

Hi! Since my daughter was born my little family always piles down in front of the Christmas tree in sleeping bags on Christmas eve and drink hot chocolate (even if it's 80 or so outside which has happened) and then we sleep out there. Usually my husband wakes us up at an ungodly hour and we open presents (you would figure it would be the 10 year old!) Its fun and it's our own little tradition now.

What we would do is read a book called the Forgotten Christmas Carols using the music disc for the songs. Then we would open one present each before going to bed. After, we would obviously open the rest of our presents on Christmas morning. Usually followed some time later by going to a movie.
